Bris and Baby Naming

A brit milah, commonly called a bris, is a Jewish ceremony where baby boys are circumcised. This generally occurs on the eight day of life.

Girls are welcomed into the faith through a baby naming ceremony.

Bar and Bat Mitzvah

BIC provides religious education beginning with preschool. This education meets a major milestone when students are around 13 for boys and 12 for girls. They are called to Torah and become a Bar (son) or Bat (daughter) of Torah.

Weddings

Couples are married standing under the Chuppah “the couple’s first home”

 

Conversions:

After studying with a Rabbi, conversion is completed by attending a Bet Din and a Mikvah.

 

Death

Beth Israel has an active Chevra Kadisha group, who act as a burial society. These dedicated men and women care for the body until burial following Jewish traditions.

 

Burial

The Beth Israel Cemetery is located at the corner of State and Marshall Streets in Jackson MS.

*In the Reform tradition, there are other events that are often celebrated, especially for students. Among these are Confirmation and trips to Israel sponsored by NFTY.

Those between 18 and 26 that have never been to Israel can take advantage of Birthright Israel which sponsors trips.
